Baltimore Archbishop William Lori Visits MDSA

Early morning freezing rain did not dampen the spirits of our students as they welcomed Baltimore Archbishop William E. Lori and Superintendent of Catholic schools, Dr. Barbara Edmondson to commemorate the start of Catholic Schools Week.

The Archbishop celebrated Mass highlighting St. Thomas Aquinas during his homily, whose feast day was today.  He also mentioned the following regarding Catholic Schools Week, “Catholic Schools Week is a wonderful time each year when we celebrate our schools and those who contribute to their excellence. It is also a time to remember the sacrifices of so many who through the years have built the extraordinary legacy of Catholic schools which we are proud to uphold and build upon today.”

Dr. Barbara Edmondson also spoke to the community and shared an inspiring quote from St. Thomas Aquinas, “If, then, you are looking for the way by which you should go, take Christ, because He Himself is the way.”

A reception was held following Mass and the Archbishop then met with students from various organizations within the school at the Padre Pio Library.  Students were able to convey how they are embracing their Catholic Faith, making a difference, and bringing others closer to Christ. Additionally, they had an opportunity to ask the Archbishop specific questions.   When asked, what can we do to turn the tide of our country on religious liberty and freedom?  His response, said Megan Tucker ’13, “freedom is not doing what we want, it is doing what we ought” and always to pray “prayer is not the icing on the cake, it is the cake.”  He called the young people to be joyful, educated, and committed Catholics.

The entire community of Mount de Sales Academy is deeply grateful for the inspirational visit today from Archbishop Lori and Dr. Edmondson as we celebrate this Year of Faith and the gift of Catholic schools.
