Indoor Track Records Set!
Mount de Sales’ Samantha Facius ‘19 remained unbeaten this indoor track season with a record setting win at the MD/DC Private Schools Championships last Saturday, February 4, at Georgetown Prep School.
The sophomore’s 1600-meter win qualified her for the New Balance High School Indoor Track and Field Championships on March 10-12 at the Armory Track and Field Center with a school and meet record time of 5-minutes, 2.80 seconds. She was also named the Baltimore Sun's Female Athlete of the Week.
That effort is 10 seconds better than her own old record and marks the sixth consecutive year MDSA track team members have qualified to compete against the Nation’s top high school runners. Last year, Samantha placed seventh in the freshman division of the Nationals.
During the season, Facius has won the 1600 and 800 meters at the IAAM league championships. She currently has the third fastest 1600 run of any Maryland high school girl and fifth best in the 800.
Facius also teamed up with sophomore Edeline Davies, senior Amanda Grebosky and freshman Grace Flynn for the 1600-meter sprint medley relay. Their time is ranked number two in Maryland.
At the Private Schools Meet, the Sailors picked up another first place from senior Kelly Szalankiewicz in the 3200-meter run.
Junior Robin Randall gave MDSA a third medal as she pole vaulted herself into second place in that event.
Besides Facius, additional Mount de Sales indoor track records have been set over the course of this winter season.
Szalankiewicz now owns the 3200 record (11:48.33) and Randall has cleared 8’ 6”.
Three other MDSA marks have also been elevated this year. Colleen Howard ’18 owns the high jump (5’) and Davies lowered her own mark in the 55-meter dash (7.28) to defend her IAAM championship. The sprint/hurdle relay team of senior Amanda Grebosky, Randall, Flynn, and sophomore Meredith Buller set that mark at 33.1.
