Track Team Accolades

A pair of barriers in girl’s high school track and field were brushed aside by MDSA athletes last week as the Sailors began final preparations for the IAAM A Conference Track and Field Championships.

Sophomore Samantha Facius became the first Mount de Sales athlete to run 1600 meters in less than five-minutes.  Competing at Reservoir High School’s Gator Invitational, Samantha won the event in 4:58.55. A time currently second fastest among all Maryland high school girls.

That effort broke a 10-year-old meet record, lowered Samantha’s own MDSA school record by nearly 10-seconds and met the qualifying standard for the National High School Track Championships in mid-June.

Two days earlier at the University of Pennsylvania’s Penn Relay Carnival in Philadelphia the four-minute barrier broken in the 4x400 meter relay with a time 3:59.92.  The quartet of Katerina Boutselis, ’18; Kevilyn Frazier, ’18; Facius and Isabella Whittaker, ’20, placed second in their section. Of the over 600 high school teams competing in the 4x400, Mount de Sales placed 69th overall and was 12th among all Maryland teams.

MDSA also had a 4x100 sprint relay team enter and that group also placed second in their heat – those running included: Frazier; Claire Nilan ’20; Jennifer Taylor ’19; and Meaghan Slattery ’20.

The Penn Relays are a three-day international completion that draws high school, collegiate, professional, and Olympic athletes to the oldest, 123 years, and largest, 30,000 competitors from as far away as South Africa.

The last meet before the league finale is at Manchester Valley High School’s Maverick Madness on Friday, May 5.  Schools from Pennsylvania and Maryland will compete.

The IAAM league season culminates in the two-day championships to be held on May 10 and 13. A total of 24 individual Sailor team members have met the title meet performance criteria. The team has qualified athletes in all 18 events to be contested and is a serious contender to be among the top three teams.

During the spring season MDSA won the team title at the Vollmer Invitational versus 33 public and private schools at Watkins Mill High School and placed second at Oakland Mills’ Scorpion Invitational.
