Track Team Excels at New Balance Outdoor Track and Field Championships

Eight Mount de Sales athletes competed in the New Balance Outdoor National High School Track and Field Championships at North Carolina A&T University, and came away with outstanding performances.

Results from all five events that the Sailors ran in Greensboro, North Carolina, June 16, 17, 18, ended up on the MDSA top 10 performance list.

Leading the way was middle distance specialist Samantha Facius, ’19, who contributed to three of those efforts.

On Friday, the sophomore ran the third best mile in MDSA history, 5:04.07, for 19th place. She already owns the top two Sailor marks.

Running in the Championship Division 1600 meter sprint medley relay on Saturday, Kevilyn Frazier, ’18, Edeline Davies, ’19, Isabella Whittaker, ’20, and Facius won their section and placed 17th overall.  All four girls will be back next year.

Sunday, Katerina Boutselis, ’18, Frazier, Whittaker and Facius joined for another Sailors’ number two mark in the 4x400 meter relay, 3:59.56, for 16th overall. Boutselis was the only returning member from last year’s recording setting 4x4 team. She and the rest of this year’s team returns.

A second 1600 sprint medley relay team of Grace Flynn, ’20, Claire Nilan, ’20, Amanda Grebosky, ’17, and Boutselis ran in the Emerging Elite division and recorded the 10th best ever MDSA time of 4:24.35. This time was good for 21st in the EE division.

Whittaker individually ran the Freshman Division 400 meters, 58.59, MDSA’s 8th best. Earlier this year she set the MDSA 400 record.

Grebosky, Frazier, Davies and Whittaker competed in the Championship Division 800 Sprint Medley and produced the 10th best school mark at 1:55.34.

The annual high school nationals draw over 5,000 athletes from nearly every state in the country.

“With tougher qualifying standards and fields limited the top 40 qualifying entrants per event this year, just being accepted into the meet was an accomplishment,” said Coach Gene Williams about the Sailors’ sixth straight visit to the nationals. “We qualified in five events and all the girls did well. With the experience gained this year the expectation is continued improvement well into the future.”

Facius Named First Team All Metro

Sophomore Samantha Facius was named to the Baltimore Sun All-Metro First Team Outdoor Track and Field team. This was announced on June 22.

Samantha missed the 2016 season due to injury, but came roaring back to set Mount de Sales school records at 1,500 meters, 1,600 meters and the Mile Run.  She became the first Sailor runner to break the 5-minute barrier with her record 4:58.55 win at the Gator Invitational.

She added IAAM league championship individual wins in the 1600 and 800 meter runs. Additionally, Facius, with MDSA team mates Katerina Boutselis, Ameila Getka and Erin Kosloski, took the 4x800 relay title as all four girls earned IAAM All Conference awards.

Twice during the spring, Samantha was recognized as, “Athlete of the Week”, once by the Sun and also WMAR-TV.

Among all Maryland high school athletes, public and private, Samantha was second ranked in the 1500, 1600, and mile, as well as ranked third in the 800.

The All Metro honor is added to the All-Metro First Team Indoor Track and Field team recognition from the winter season.
