Sailors' Choice Award: 2010

The 1976-1977 Basketball Team

When a basketball team without a home court for games, limited practice space (all off campus) and limited practice time began the season, their goals were to win the most games in Mount de Sales Academy history, have the school’s best win percentage, and prevail in the Baltimore Archdiocesan Tournament. In 1977 those goals were all checked off, plus a national ranking!
The team was so good that the first MDSA Hall of Fame induction class in 2008 had three players from that squad among the honorees: Margie Hook, plus sisters Kay and Teresa Reymann.

The 1977 championship tournament at the University of Maryland Baltimore County proved a battle in all three games. However, coach Hank Hofmeister’s dynamic Sailor dozen stopped Towson Catholic 37-32 for the title before an audience of 1,000. The season’s 17th win came after defeating Bishop Walsh of Cumberland, 56-52, in the opening round and Seton High, 45-44, in the semis.

In preparation for their title march, the Sailors played games against the toughest opponents available state-wide for its overall record of 17-wins and 2-losses. But that travel schedule worked out perfectly for the team without a home base!
