The Art of Letter Writing

Hello Sailors,

I think one of the most difficult challenges we are asked to face in this time of quarantine is isolation. While computers and phones are a huge gift, many people who do not have copious amounts of technology are left feeling more alone than ever.

What do I suggest as a remedy to this problem, you may ask? Letters. Since we have so much time on our hands, this can be an amazing opportunity for us to take the time to write a good old-fashioned letter to someone who may be feeling particularly lonely during this pandemic. Reading a hand-written letter speaks intentionality and care to the receiver, even more than a thoughtful text ever could. And who doesn’t love getting stuff in the mail, am I right?!

My “Service Tuesday” challenge for you this week: write a letter to a loved one or make cards for those in your local nursing home. If you don’t know where that is, Frederick Villa will happily accept snail mail for their residents! I will add their address below. You can simply address your letters or cards to “the residents at Frederick Villa.” One thoughtful letter would be great, or you could send a whole package of cards that could be distributed to multiple residents.

If you’ve been feeling isolated during quarantine, I encourage you to give of your time and energy to love another person (even someone you do not know). St. Pope John Paul II said that mankind “cannot fully find himself except through a sincere gift of self” (Gaudium et Spes 24). If you’ve been feeling a little lost these past few days, a great way to become grounded is by giving of yourself—your time, your talents, your love—for another person.

Some ideas and tips for letter writing or card-making:
  • If you are an artist, make something beautiful! You don’t have to write a ton of lengthy paragraphs. A thoughtful drawing or simple hand-written poem can brighten someone’s day immediately. Beauty speaks volumes!
  • Use your calligraphy skills (or practice a new skill) by sending out inspirational quotes. If there is a quote or Bible verse that is bringing you comfort, make it beautiful and send it to someone who might need the encouragement.
  • If you can’t think of anything to write, tell a joke! Write the beginning of the joke on the front and the punch line on the inside of a card.
  • If you plan to write to a friend or loved one you know, tell them how you are spending your days at home. Share about a skill you have begun learning while at home or tell them about the new show that you’ve been super into recently.
  • If you miss a friend from Mount de Sales, tell them all the ways you are grateful to have them in your life. Everyone loves receiving affirmation, and it would be so fun to see a friend’s familiar handwriting in the mail 😊

If you would like to send cards to Frederick Villa, the address is: 711 Academy Rd, Catonsville, MD 21228.

You are in my constant thoughts and prayers!

Yours in Christ,

Miss Bolesta
