Audrey Powers '94 Soars Into Space!

BLAST OFF! Alumna Audrey Powers ’94, vice president of mission and flight operation at Blue Origin, along with actor William Shatner and two crewmates, soared into space today on board Blue Origin’s New Shepard NS-18.

MDSA held a “Watch Party” today in the new Center for Performing Arts and Student Life to view the momentous launch. Though students were unable to attend due to PSATs, many alumnae and members of our community joined us for this significant launch. Principal Sister Mary Raymond Thye led the community in prayer prior to the space launch.

Sister adds, “This is a great opportunity for Audrey and a great opportunity for us to show role models like her for our students to see and to aspire to. What a great privilege for Audrey! It’s a new era with a Sailor in Space!”

TV crews from WJZ and WBAL covered this historic event and interviewed Audrey’s classmates, Angie Burke Romeo, Julie Simon Gilless, as well as Principal Sister Mary Raymond.

Her classmates shared with The Catholic Review, "I’m here to watch my best friend go to space,” said Julie Simon Gilless. She said Powers was achieving a lifelong dream. “She always wanted to be an astronaut.”
“This is her life’s calling,” added classmate Angela Burke Romeo, Performing Arts Chair at Mount de Sales.
