Coach Fran Daum

When Coach Daum took over the Mount de Sales basketball team in 1978 she continued to build up the school’s legacy of being one of the top girls' programs in the Baltimore Metropolitan area.
Her MDSA teams were ranked by the Baltimore Sun among top Metro high schools, even among much larger public schools.

The highlight of her Sailor coaching career was the capturing of the Baltimore Catholic League championship for the 1984-1985 season, a season that caught the imagination of the entire school and saw the entire student body bussed to a playoff game at Mercy.

Fran’s interest in basketball began when she was six and saw some boys playing the game. But she had to wait until the seventh grade to play on an organized basis with other girls. That career delay didn’t hold her back from starring at then Seton High School on an undefeated Catholic League championship team in 1965. She was also selected as Seton’s Athlete of the Year.

Between her Seton playing days and coaching at Mount de Sales Academy, Fran had a stellar stay at the University of Maryland of Baltimore County, where she was named to the UMBC Hall of Fame after playing on the Retriever’s first ever women’s basketball team. Additionally she was a starting player in volleyball for UMBC.

During her college days she was named to the Maryland All-State Collegiate Team, then continued on to play on the international level, defeating the Canadian National team and U.S. women’s college champ, Immaculata, in a tournament in Indianapolis. Fran was named to the All-Tournament team.

She ended her coaching career in 2003 and now travels and takes classes at Johns Hopkins University.
