Fire Protection Engineering Competition

Over the past semester, students in Ms. Fuecker’s STEM classes once again had the opportunity to participate in a Fire Protection Engineering competition that was sponsored by the FPE Department at University of Maryland, College Park. As part of the competition, the girls got to build (and decorate!) a model home, and design a suppression and detection system to alert occupants of a fire, and then put it out in a short amount of time. The students worked hard, even getting to test small models of their systems outside, fix any flaws, then test again.

Last week, the students got to see their final products in action at their “Burn Day,” which took place at the ATF Research Lab. There were over 200 students who participated in the event, and we are pleased to announce that Mount deSales had the overall WINNING TEAM comprised of Sophia Averza, Liz Akers, Malina Beideman, Olivia Fuselier, and Mae Smith. Their system was able to detect and suppress the fire in 8 seconds! Way to go, Sailors!
